The Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics) of the University of Ilorin, Kwara State, Prof. Moji Taibat Bakare-Odunola, has advised Nigerian students not to regard education as a scam, stressing that academic qualifications must be complemented with entrepreneurial skills to achieve success in today's competitive world.
Prof. Toibat Bakare-Odunola gave the advice through her representative, Prof. Jamiu Adetayo Adeniran of the University of Ilorin, during the 9th Matriculation Ceremony of Atiba University, Oyo, where a new set of students was formally admitted into various academic programmes for the 2026/2027 academic session.
Delivering a lecture titled "Degrees Are Not Enough: Building Entrepreneurial Capacity for National Development," Prof. Adeniran emphasized that possessing a degree certificate alone is no longer sufficient in the modern economy.
According to him, graduates must be entrepreneurial, creative, skill-oriented, and innovative in order to contribute meaningfully to national development and remain relevant in an evolving global environment.
He encouraged the newly admitted students to make productive use of digital technology and emerging applications, noting that the world is rapidly changing and individuals must adapt to remain competitive.
Prof. Adeniran further advised the students to focus on developing practical skills, building professional networks, acquiring market awareness, and exploring opportunities for capital formation and business development.
"Academic degrees alone cannot provide market awareness, business connections, capital formation opportunities, or the practical skills required to succeed in life. These can only be achieved through entrepreneurship, networking, and continuous self-development," he said.
Speaking at the event, the Vice-Chancellor of Atiba University, Oyo, Prof. Sunday Olawale Okeniyi, congratulated the newly admitted students on securing admission into the institution, describing their admission as a testament to their hard work, dedication, and determination.
He urged the students to remain focused on their academic pursuits, uphold the institution's core values, and avoid all forms of social vices capable of jeopardizing their future.
Prof. Okeniyi reiterated the university commitment to providing quality education, character development, and a conducive learning environment that would enable students to excel academically and become responsible leaders in society.
The Vice-Chancellor noted that the matriculation ceremony marked the students' formal admission into the university community and reminded them of the need to abide strictly by the institution's rules and regulations.
He also warned against examination malpractice, cultism, drug abuse, and other forms of misconduct, stressing that the university maintains a zero-tolerance policy towards indiscipline.
In her remarks, the Acting Registrar of Atiba University Oyo, Mrs. Oyepeju Ayomide Ogunseye, Esq., administered the matriculation oath to the students, who pledged to obey the university's regulations and pursue their studies diligently.

He said the event marked another significant milestone in the growth and development of Atiba University as it continues to nurture future leaders equipped with both academic knowledge and entrepreneurial competence.
Speaking on behalf of the matriculating students, Awogbemi Michael expressed gratitude to the university management for the opportunity to study at the institution and promised that the new students would strive for academic excellence and exemplary conduct.
The ceremony attracted principal officers of the university, members of the Governing Council, academic staff, parents, guardians, and other well-wishers who gathered to witness the occasion.
Among the dignitaries present were the President and Founder of Atiba University, Pa James Adesokan Ojebode, represented by Dr. Samuel Aderemi Adekunle, Founder and Executive Director of Owu College of Management Technology, Wasinmi, Ogun State; the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Sunday Olawale Okeniyi; Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Sunday Ajao Owolabi; Acting Registrar, Mrs. Oyepeju Ayomide Ogunseye, Esq.; Acting Bursar, Mr. Olugboyega Adetiloye Oyeniyi; Coordinator of the Open and Distance Learning Programme, Dr. S.A. Adeniran; Dr. Solomon Akanbi; and the Chief Imam of Atiba University, Abayomi Ibikunle.
