Former member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Oladipupo Adebutu, has emerged as the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in Ogun State for the 2027 election.
Adebutu emerged through an affirmation process conducted across the 236 wards in the 20 local government areas of the state. The formal declaration was made on Sunday at the Abeokuta Sports Club, Oke-Ilewo, Abeokuta, where party members endorsed him as the party’s standard bearer.
Chairman of the Ogun PDP Governorship Primary Committee, Chief Ariyo Afolabi, disclosed that voting had earlier taken place in all the wards before the final collation and announcement at the venue.
“According to the Electoral Act and the PDP Constitution, Hon. Ladi Adebutu was the only aspirant screened by the party,” Afolabi said. “He has therefore emerged as the consensus candidate and is hereby declared the PDP governorship candidate.”
Speaking at the event, the Ogun State PDP Chairman, Hon. Abayomi Tella, described the exercise as proof that the party remains united and formidable in the state.
“This is not the time for mere talk but for action. God has stabilized the PDP in Ogun State,” Tella stated. “In previous contests, we experienced several internal disputes, but today we have achieved consensus peacefully, and we give glory to God for that.”
Party leaders explained that the consensus arrangement was adopted to strengthen unity within the party ahead of the 2027 governorship election.
In his acceptance speech, Adebutu expressed appreciation to party leaders, stakeholders, executives, and members for endorsing him as the PDP flag bearer.
“History has once again been made today with my emergence as the consensus governorship candidate of our great party under a united PDP,” he said. “I sincerely appreciate our leaders, executive members at all levels, stakeholders, and party faithful for their unwavering support and confidence in me.”
He urged members of the party to continue to maintain peace and unity, describing internal cohesion as essential to the PDP’s success in the state.
Adebutu also accused the All Progressives Congress of failing the people of Ogun State despite the state’s rich human and natural resources.
“For over 15 years, the APC has kept Ogun State under siege while the people continue to suffer hardship,” he said. “Despite our abundant resources, the people have not enjoyed the benefits they deserve.”
The former lawmaker further recalled the 2023 governorship election, insisting that the PDP enjoyed massive support across the state and expressing confidence of victory in 2027.
“I believe that in 2027, the votes of the people will count and by the grace of God, I will emerge as the duly elected governor of Ogun State,” Adebutu added. “I appeal to all PDP members to remain focused and committed to reclaiming Ogun State from the APC government.”
Also present at the event was former Governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose, who congratulated Adebutu and urged party members to remain steadfast in their support for the PDP candidate ahead of the 2027 election
