No Election In Ogun State Council Of NUJ

There was a mild drama at Iwe-Irohin, the Headquarters of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ogun State Council when members of the Union registered their grievances and displeasure over the non-compliance with the provisions of the Constitution and Electoral Guidelines.

The Election, which was scheduled by the Abiodun Taiwo-led Credentials Committee to hold between the hours of 7am and 10am on Thursday, 11th December, 2025, was not held within the scheduled time.

Meanwhile, the List of Voters posted revealed gross irregularies as members were deliberately omitted and many of those listed as either Associate Members or people who are not known to the NUJ Constitution.

It will recalled that the outgoing Chairman who is reconnecting ought to have been disqualified, having failed to fulfil Article 6, Section 7f. While nominators were Associate members and non-qualified member of NUJ. 

This also affects other members of outgoing Executive members. While bonafide candidates and members were disqualified from participating in the ElElection.

It should be noted that some NUJ National Officers led by B Zone, Comrade Ronke Samo, and Zonal Secretary, Comrade Rasaq Alege also witnessed the failed of the elections within the stipulated within  7 to 10am.

“Indeed, I wonder for somebody like Wale Olanrewaju the Chairman of the council, who says he stands for integrity and all what not, he shouldn’t have allowed this to happen, he should have performed a business session and account for the financial records of the union, and dissolve the Exco aftermath, but shunned all these, brought all of us out here and thrust.., (hissed) I don’t want to talk again.”

Earlier, obviously angered by the impasse, Niyi Akinbobola, a journalist said that people were agitating that it is either they allow them to vote or there will be no more election.

He said, “If they’ve been deducting money from every chapel and now there is election and are saying people should not vote, it is not possible, you can not accredit some certain people and leave out others, it’s not done that way, why are they doing all this?”

The Security personnel present, including DSS, Nigeria Police and Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, were witness to non-compliance with the Election Time slated between 7am and 10am.
