Senator Gbenga Daniel has raised an alarm, claiming that certain individuals within Ogun State are collaborating with outsiders to sabotage the agitation for the creation of Ijebu-Remo State.
The former governor, who is sponsoring the bill for the new state at the National Assembly, issued this warning during a community tour in Ijebu Imusin. He stated that this conspiracy threatens to derail years of collective struggle and the legacy of the late Awujale of Ijebu Land, Oba Sikiru Adetona.
Daniel expressed concern that the statehood bid could suffer the same fate as the Dangote Refinery, which was moved from Ogun to Lagos after his tenure. He revealed that the South-West geopolitical zone may only get one new state, placing the Ijebu-Remo proposal in direct competition with a similar demand from Ibadan.
"Our only advantage is that, of all the provinces created in 1923, only the Ijebu Province—which comprises nine local governments—has yet to become a state," Daniel said. He strongly condemned those allegedly working against the dream, stating, "We are short of calling them bastards."
Linking the cause to national politics, Daniel tied the creation of Ijebu-Remo State to his re-election bid and President Bola Tinubu's potential second term. He described opposition to Tinubu's administration as "idle talk," praising the President's efforts to retool the economy.
On developmental projects, the senator announced that the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr. Dele Alake, has pledged to explore the vast bitumen deposits in Ijebu East. The event also featured the distribution of empowerment tools and free medical services for residents.
