Veteran Nollywood actor, Taiwo Hassan, popularly known as Ogogo, has reportedly died at the age of 66 after battling stage-four cancer.
Reports of the actor’s death emerged on Sunday, barely days after his family publicly appealed for urgent medical assistance over his deteriorating health condition.
Ogogo, a respected figure in the Yoruba film industry, had been battling advanced cancer, with his daughters, Kira and Lima Taiwo, recently making emotional appeals to Nigerians, medical professionals and hospitals for assistance.
The family had disclosed that the actor’s condition had become critical and that he needed specialised medical attention. His daughters had stressed that they were not seeking financial donations but assistance from medical professionals capable of managing his condition.
The latest development came after Kira Taiwo reportedly appeared on an Instagram Live session on Sunday in an emotional state, allegedly announcing that her father had died.
In the emotional video, Kira was reportedly heard crying and repeatedly saying that her father was dead and that she wanted to go home.
“My father is dead. I want to go home. I can’t believe this. My father died five minutes ago,” she was reportedly heard saying.
Ogogo’s reported death comes only days after his family had publicly revealed the seriousness of his health condition. On August 18, his daughter Lima had strongly dismissed an earlier social media report claiming that the actor had died, describing the report as false and urging the public to stop spreading fake news.
His daughters had earlier revealed that the actor was suffering from stage-four cancer and that his condition had deteriorated significantly. Kira had also reportedly disclosed that doctors had informed the family that chemotherapy could no longer be administered.
However, as of the time of filing this report, the reported death had not been independently confirmed by a formal statement from Ogogo’s management or family.
Earlier reports of his death had been dismissed by the family, making official confirmation particularly important.
Taiwo Hassan, born in 1959, built a decades-long career as an actor, producer, director and screenwriter and became widely known by his stage name, Ogogo. He remained one of the recognisable faces of the Yoruba film industry.
The actor’s reported death, if officially confirmed, would mark a major loss to Nigeria’s entertainment industry, particularly the Yoruba film community.
Comments circulating online include prayers for the actor and sympathy for his family, with many describing Ogogo as a veteran and legend whose contribution to Yoruba cinema would not be forgotten.
