Former Super Eagles captain John Mikel Obi has praised Nigeria’s performance in their 2-1 victory over Lesotho in Polokwane on Friday but urged the players to maintain their focus and continue playing quality football as the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers reach a crucial stage.
Speaking after the match, Mikel emphasized that while qualification remains possible, the team must ensure they deliver performances that make Nigerians proud, regardless of the final outcome.
Even if Nigeria fails to qualify for the World Cup, the players should at least play good football that fans won’t regret watching,” Mikel said.
The World Cup is a tournament no team wants to miss, and at this stage, Benin is the team that will determine our fate. If South Africa loses to Rwanda and Nigeria defeats Benin, I believe we still have a chance to qualify. But our players must play quality football that brings victory. I really enjoyed their performance and today’s win.”
Nigeria currently sit third in Group C with 14 points, behind Benin Republic and South Africa.
The Super Eagles will host Benin Republic in Uyo on Tuesday, a match that could decide their qualification fate.
