Reform Ogun PDP, Sowunmi Tells Party Leaders

By Zainab Ojumola, Abeokuta

PDP Chieftain and former governorship aspirant, Segun Sowunmi, has called for reform within the Ogun State chapter of the party, stressing  the need for revitalization to achieve success in future elections.

Speaking to members of the Consolidated Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in Abeokuta, Sowunmi encouraged the party to return to its core values and ideology, while emphasising  the importance of unity among leaders and adherence to party rules.

Sowunmi wondered why the party lost governorship elections three consecutive times in the state, blaming it on lack of unity within the party.

He noted that excessive litigation resulting from party primaries and congresses has overburdened the courts, even as he stressed  the need for discipline and accountability within the party.

The party Chieftain noted that revitalising the PDP in Ogun State will  promote a more sustainable and effective political landscape.

He said “I discover that we have made the political space extremely litigations. The amount of cases we produce as a result of our primaries Congress, this is a bit on the high side. So much that we have overburdened the courts. And  it is because political parties do not have the discipline to obey their own rules.

“You write a rule for yourself. Nobody forced you to write that rule. Why shouldn’t you be compelled and forced to obey it? So  I believe We have created political parties in the image of the person that is either governing or president. That’s not sustainable.

“Over and above that I discover that we have made the political space extremely litigations. The amount of cases we produce as a result of our primaries Congress, this is a bit on the high side.

So much that we have overburdened the courts. And  it is because political parties do not have the discipline to obey their own rules”, He said.

In his effort to ensure that the party is reformed, Sowunmi disclosed his intention to run for the party’s national chairman.

Giving his reasons, Sowunmi said is plan is to make the party attractive in terms of ideology, democratic style for the masses in order to have a Nigeria of the peoples dream.

He believes that political parties should produce a leader who is selfless, patriotic and ready to serve the people, leading them in a direction they really desire.

“I’m running to be chairman of the People’s Democratic Party of Nigeria. Why? It’s because I have looked at the country in the last 24 years and I have convinced myself. That is until we can make political parties attractive enough To attract men like you and women like you and even others like you.

“To even participate We will be risking that the system will not throw up the best. And if the system cannot trust the best Whoever becomes whoever the system throws up is what we are going to have to manage.”
