The scramble to recapture fleeing inmates from the Suleja Medium Security Custodial Centre in Niger State continues as authorities report that 14 of the escapees have been apprehended.
However, the pursuit remains ongoing for the remaining 105 inmates who are still at large following the devastating aftermath of a severe downpour on Wednesday night.
Confirming the latest developments, Adamu Duza, the Spokesperson for the Federal Capital Territory Command of the Nigerian Correctional Service, disclosed that concerted efforts involving intelligence officers, armed squadron officers, and collaboration with the Nigeria Police Force, DSS, and other security agencies have led to the re-arrest of 14 escapees.
The chaos unfolded after the downpour inflicted extensive damage on the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Suleja, resulting in the escape of 119 inmates.
The breach in the perimeter fence, caused by the severe weather, served as an avenue for the prisoners to flee, exacerbating the already dire situation.
Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, who personally inspected the wreckage caused by the downpour, emphasized the urgent need for comprehensive reforms across the nation’s 240 custodial centres.
He pledged the Federal Government’s unwavering commitment to ensuring the remaining fleeing inmates are swiftly brought back into custody.
Despite the progress made in recapturing some of the escapees, the hunt for the remaining 105 inmates continues, with security forces intensifying efforts by scouring neighbouring communities in search of the fugitives.
Duza affirmed that the operation remains ongoing until all the fleeing inmates are accounted for and returned to custody.
