Banks and schools in Abeokuta, Ogun state capital, have horribly closed for the day, as residents in different areas of the state trooped out to protest scarcity of the new naira notes.
Bankers were seen on Tuesday, rushing home from their respective banks in Asero, Obantoko, Sapon and Oke-Ilewo, Abeokuta to avoid being caught up with the anger of the protesters .
It was gathered that some agitated residents have set some areas in Sapon, Adatan, Asero ablaze, protesting the scarcity of the new naira notes.
It was also gathered that Zenith Bank has also shutdown it’s activities, nationwide due to the protest by irate Nigerians.
Also, some protesters were seen at the Wema Bank and First Bank in Lafenwa, Abeokuta, agitating, as they destroyed the Automobile Teller Machine in the bank.
Also school in Abeokuta, Noble College, alleging that some police officers have thrown tear-gas carnister into the school premises during the protest.
The protest around the school axis started from the GTB bank in Asero, down to Car wash Adatan and Sapon areas of Abeokuta, where residents were seen unleashing their anger, as they were unable to get their money from the bank.
When contacted, the spokesman of the police in the state, SP Abimbola Oyeyemi confirmed the protest but said officers are already atop of the situation to ensure that it does not lead to destruction of property and loss of lives.
He said a group of boys are involved, stressing that the command studying the protesters to know whether those behind the protests.
Although the police stormed the locations and dispersed the protesters but as soon as the police withdrew from the scene, they regroup in a greater intensity making bonfires with disused tyres.
This disrupted traffic movement as motorists and pedestrians ran off the road into safe directions to avoid the protesters.
The protests has now paralysed business activities in the state capital as the whole city has now turned to a ghost town with schools sending their students out of schools immediately.
