No fewer than six persons were confirmed dead on Tuesday morning, while several others sustained varying degrees of injuries in a ghastly multiple accident at the Sango-Ota Tollgate axis of Ota, Ogun State.
The tragic incident, which occurred along the ever-busy Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway, involved a Mack tanker truck loaded with groundnut oil, a commercial tricycle popularly known as “Marwa,” and a Suzuki mini-bus, otherwise called “Korope.”
Eyewitnesses said the accident happened when the driver of the tanker truck, reportedly travelling from Ota toward Lagos, allegedly drove recklessly and rammed into other vehicles, including the tricycle and pedestrians at the tollgate area.
The impact of the collision was said to have caused panic among commuters and residents, as emergency responders, including TRACE Operatives led by Ota Divisional Commander, Salau Hammed, and other sister agents battled to rescue trapped victims from the wreckage.
The crash led to a massive traffic gridlock on the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway, leaving motorists stranded for hours and disrupting movement between the adjoining states of Lagos State and Ogun State.
Confirming the incident, the spokesperson of the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE), Commander Babatunde Akinbiyi, disclosed that no fewer than six vehicles were involved in the accident.
He listed the affected vehicles as a truck with registration number EKY 913YH (white cab, green body), a Suzuki mini-bus with registration number SMK 16YK (yellow colour), and a TVS tricycle with registration number AAA 840QM (yellow colour), among others.
According to Akinbiyi, the bodies of the deceased have been deposited at the Ifo State Mortuary, while injured victims were rescued at the scene and rushed to the Ogun State Hospital, Ota, for medical attention.
He urged motorists to always adhere to traffic rules and exercise caution, especially along major highways, to prevent avoidable loss of life.
