At least eight individuals have been verified as deceased in a fire event involving an oil tanker in Ometan community, situated in Okpe local government area of Delta State.

Information obtained by Lagos Reporters indicates that the occurrence transpired on a Friday when the ill-fated tanker from Effurun purportedly lost control while attempting to overtake another truck a short distance away from the boundary bridge linking Uvwie and Okpe Local Government Area.

Eyewitnesses reported that the front section of the oil tanker separated abruptly from the rear portion during movement, causing an explosion. All structures within the vicinity of the accident site in the community were destroyed by the fire.

Several residents trapped in the buildings were also killed in the blaze. The governor of the state, Sheriff Oborevwori, visited the location to offer his condolences to the Ometan community and the families of the victims.

While at the site, the governor, along with the Speaker of the House of Assembly, Emomotimi Guwor, and the former chairman of Okpe local government area, expressed his sorrow.

He mentioned that he was absent when the tragic event took place. Upon his arrival, he encountered the deceased and individuals who witnessed the unfortunate occurrence.

"It is a grievous situation, and I extend my sympathies to the people of Ometan community and the families of those who perished in this calamity," he remarked.
