Lisabi Grammar School in Abeokuta marked its impressive 80th Anniversary in a week-long celebration, culminating in a series of events that showcased the school's rich history and commitment to education.
The highlight of the anniversary was the commissioning of various projects facilitated by the school's dedicated Old Students Association.
The Anniversary Lecture, a pivotal part of the celebration, featured Arch. Kola Ogunleye as the guest lecturer, whose insightful presentation titled "Rethinking the Education Employment Methods: The Imperative of a New System" resonated deeply with attendees.
Ogunleye emphasized the urgent need for stakeholders to harness the power of skills acquisition to drive economic growth and combat unemployment among Nigerian youth.
Ogunleye stated, "The crux of the matter lies in how we can provide education that aligns with employment opportunities, particularly in a country where youth unemployment exceeds 54%. Unrest, violence, and youth misbehavior often stem from a lack of meaningful engagement or employment after schooling. This is exacerbated by a skills gap and the disconnect between acquired skills and societal or private sector needs. Additionally, job creation lags due to economic challenges."
He advocated for a collaborative effort between educational providers, the government, and employers to shape curricula and foster employability skills. Ogunleye emphasized the importance of instilling 21st-century skills like critical thinking, character development, civic knowledge, reasoning, and creativity.
"There is need for collaboration between the providers of educational services, the government and the users of the output of educational process. The collaboration in term of curriculum and all other things.
"We also need to look at employability skills and 24th Century skills that is expected of any body that is going out there to look for job; like critical thinking, character, Civic knowledge and reasoning creativity. We also need to incorporate with technical and vocational education into our system from the moment they entered primary school because it will enable them to stand on their own as entrepreneurs.
During the event, Mrs. Odutayo Titilope, the school's Principal, expressed gratitude to the Old Students Association for their generous contributions.
She also implored the students to emulate the old Students and strive for even greater achievements in the future.
"The old student had really done alot to school by providing social amenities to school and scholarship for the brilliant incumbent students.
"I want to enjoin old students that they should not keep their eyes off the school. And i pray to Almighty God to continue to bless them. I want urge the incumbent students to look up to these people and face their study, be focused and study hard and see themselves as who can become better in the future than the old students.
Comrade Fadipe Olushola, the Global Publicity Secretary of the Lisabi Grammar School Old Students Association, outlined the week's activities, including a roadwork event, career talks, health initiatives, an anniversary lecture, and the official commissioning of various projects.
The commissioned projects included the School Junction Entrance (1993 Set), School Main Gate (1988 Set with renovations by 1982 Set), a Borehole (1980 Set), a Lawn Tennis Court (1982 Set), an Administrative Block (renovated by 1991 Set), Chairs and Tables for Teachers (1978 Set), Concrete Seating (1973 Set), Solar Lighting (1985 Set), a Food Bay (1983 Set), and Male and Female Hostels constructed by the late Chief Bode Akindele.
Fadipe added that the celebration continued with a Novelty Match, showcasing the talents of both Old Students and School Teachers, and an exciting match between Lisabi Grammar School Team and Baptist Boys High School Team.
The week concluded with a grand Jumat Service at Ijaye Central Mosque, the Showcase of Talent, the Investiture of newly elected global Executives, and a Gala Night.
The Grand Finale on Saturday featured the launching and Awards Presentation to select Old Students and incumbent students who excelled in their endeavours.
