A senior reporter with the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), Abeokuta station in Ogun State, Yemi Dalemo and his cameraman, were on Friday, allegedly beaten up by some security guards attached to the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital (OOUTH), Sagamu.
It was gathered that the senior journalist with his cameraman had visited the hospital for a follow-up report on a corpse which reportedly disappeared at the facility
A corpse has reportedly missed at the mortuary of the OOUTH, throwing the family members who had prepared for burial, into disbelief.
It was gathered that the family members had on Friday, visited the hospital to retrieve corpse of a woman deposited at the facility over four months ago, ahead of the final burial.
The relatives went from Ijebu-Ode axis to Sagamu with an ambulance and undertakers to retrieve the female corpse, only to find out that the remains were missing.
The Chief Medical Director , Dr. Oluwabunmi Fatungase, in a statement, blamed the incident on “mix-up of corpses” in the hospital, with a firm reassurance that investigation was in progress to unravel the mystery and retrieve the missing corpse.
However, it was gathered that the NTA reporters had on Friday visited the OOUTH for a follow-up report, but they were allegedly attacked by the overzealous security men.
According to a source, the two broadcast Journalists who went to investigate the missing corpse at OOUTH , Sagamu were giving the beaten of their lives when five security operatives from the hospital descended on them outside the hospital premises.
Sources said the journalists had earlier reported at the Chief Medical Director and office of the most senior medical officials office, to notify them of the presence of the NTA team at the hospital.
It was further gathered that none of the senior official was ready to speak to the NTA crew on the missing corpse, but the journalists were able to take shots of the activities within the hospital in order to file a situation report.
The NTA cameraman was said to have recorded some movement on both sides of the road leading from Isale Oko into the Sagamu community.
“Trouble started when a security attached to the Morbid Anatomy and Histopathology Department of the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching hospital Sagamu met the journalists shortly after they did a piece-to-cam, asking them to identify themselves which they did but later went to report to the hospital management,” a reliable source said.
Witnesses said the security guards later emerged and pounced on the journalists who were on official duty.
“During the incident,their equipment was damaged and seized by the security men who overpowered them while also sustaining injuries,” it was gathered.
Findings revealed that it took the intervention of passers-by who were coming from Jumat Service before they could be rescued from the severe beaten and maltreatment meted to them.
The General Manager of the station, was said to have informed the Police Authority in Ogun State who later came to rescue the reporters and invited the security personnel to their station along Aiyepe road.
It was gathered that the Journalists were made to write statements and fill a bail bond before leaving the station.
“The police also got the statement of the accused security personnel of the hospital and released them on self recognition,” it was gathered.
