The Ogun State Fire and Safety Services has embarked on sensitisation to government’s Ministries, Departments and Agencies ( MDAs), towards ensuring proper enlightenment on precautionary safety measures at preventing fire outbreak at workplace.
This was brought to the fore during a sensitisation training for the staffers in the Ministry of Information and Strategy on “Fire Preparedness and Evacuation Procedure” at the Governor’s Office Press Centre, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.
In his welcome address, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Alhaji Waheed Adesina said ignorance on how to avert fire incident was responsible for most outbreaks, which often resulted in loss of lives and property.
Adesina assured that the Ministry was willing to partner with the agency to further enlighten members of the public on the prevention of fire outbreaks and precautionary measures through its channels of communication.
On his part, his counterpart in the Ministry of Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Affairs, Dr. Rotimiolu Akinlesi lauded the Prince Dapo Abiodun- led administration for its intervention in the State’s fire and safety services, appreciating the Head of Service for his approval of the sensitisation in MDAs.
While speaking on the topic, “Fire Preparedness and Evacuation Procedure”,the Director, Fire and Safety Services, Engr. Fatai Adefala said the sensitisation was aimed at equipping Civil Servants with adequate knowledge and strategies to forestall fire hazards and respond quickly in case of outbreaks, admonishing them to pay more attention to fire safety measures around them to avoid casualties.
Adefala added that fire outbreak could be a result of natural, arson, and carelessness, enjoining people to desist from a willful or deliberate act of setting a fire with an intention to cause damage to a person or property, negligence, improper wiring, indiscriminate bush burning, overloading of the socket, children playing with light-generating object, unattended cooking, among others.
He stated that "most fires start as accidents due to natural and man-made causes. The State Fire and Safety Services has been at the forefront of carrying out advocacy sessions, sensitisation and awareness programme on prevention of fire in workplaces, homes and public places".
Speaking on behalf of the participants, Mr. Wale Olanrewaju and Mrs. Taiwo Oduntan said the training was a good step that puts every individual on alert regarding incidents of fire outbreaks and tools that should be used in saving lives and property.
