Ogun Area 1 Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Monday, April 11, 2022, turned over a large quantity of weeds, suspected to be Cannabis Sativa (Indian Hemp), with a Duty Payable Value (DPV) of N120, 848, 768 to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).
The contraband, comprised 319 sacks of the raw item, 476 units, wrapped in book size and 96 other units, wrapped in coconut size.
At the handing over of the substances to the state commander of NDLEA, Ishaku Yusuf Kwajafa, in Abeokuta, Ogun 1 Customs Area Controller (CAC), Comptroller Makinde Bamidele said, the exercise was done in line with the existing respect for each agency's statutory functions.
He also stated that, it would further strengthen the synergy between the Customs Service and the narcotics agency.
The substances, intercepted within the past four months of Makinde's assumption of duty in the command, were, however, subjected to a test before newsmen by the NDLEA, using the United Nation's testing kits, to ascertain its originality.
Makinde noted that the command got the approval of the Customs Controller-General, Col. Ahmed Ali (Retd), for the exercise to hold
In his reaction, after taken possession of the substances, the NDLEA commander, Kwajafa, appreciated the Customs operatives' adroitness, saying, the seizure had reduced the risk of impending crisis Ogun and its neighbouring states would have witnessed, should the contraband had found its way into the society.
Kwajafa, once again, commended the Ogun Area 1 Command of Customs, and assured of his agency's continued cooperation and collaboration with it, for a better service delivery.
