Re-Cultists Take Over Abeokuta: Police Condemn Report, Narrate What Happened, How Normalcy Was Restored

 By Our Correspondent

The Ogun State Police Command has debunked news making the rounds on social media that cultists had taken over the entire state capital, Abeokuta, a story that was an offshoot of a bloody clash between two rival cult groups.

In the said supremacy war that took place at the Oluwo area of the metropolis on Saturday, March, 2022, one person was reportedly killed.

In its reaction, the command spoke through its spokesman (PPRO), DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi, saying: "contrary to the rumour being peddled on social media that cultists have taken over the city of Abeokuta, the command wants to reiterate that the situation has been brought under control and our men are solidly on ground to checkmate the activities of these hoodlums".

According to him: "In the early hours of Friday, 25th of March, 2022, the Ogun State Police Command received a distress call that there was a clash between two rival cult gangs at the Oluwo area of Abeokuta, which left one person dead.

In view of this, the Ogun State Police moved into action and quickly brought the situation under control".

He said that the swift arrival of its operatives at the scene led to the arrest of an unspecified but large number of suspected cultists, who, he said, are currently under investigation at the the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID), Eleweran in Abeokuta.

Noting that, "As an organization saddled with the constitutional responsibilities of protecting lives and properties, the command will not fold her hands and allow some disgruntled elements to make life unbearable for the residents", the police image maker said. He further said that the command had launched a serious clampdown operation against any known or suspected cult member in the length and breadth of the state.

While appealing to members of the public to disregard the panicking rumour peddled on the social media, and go about their lawful businesses without fear of molestation or harassment, the command reassured them of their safety at all times.
"Parents and guardians are hereby warned, by this release, to call their children/wards to order as anybody caught involved in any act capable of undermining the security of the state will be dealt with in the most decisive manner. To be forewarned is to be forearmed", the statement concluded.
