Liverpool win Carabao Cup after Kepa’s decisive penalty miss for Chelsea

Liverpool defeated Chelsea 11-10 on penalty shootout on Sunday to win the 2022 Carabao Cup.

Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga missed the decisive penalty to hand Liverpool the title after all the previous 10 players had found the net for each side.

The Spanish goalkeeper who had been brought in during the final stages of the game, failed to save any of the Liverpool spot kicks before eventually missing his own.

Both sides had failed to score during regulation time, taking the game into penalties at 0-0.

Chelsea had three goals disallowed for offside during the game, while Liverpool’s Joel Matip also had his goal ruled out for a foul and offside.

SkySports pundits, Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville both condemned Thomas Tuchel’s decision to bring in Kepa for Mendy who was impressive all through the game.

“I hope it puts to bed the idea of bringing on goalkeepers on for shootouts. Mendy’s one of the world’s best goalkeepers, and then you bring on Kepa instead, ridiculous.

“I didn’t like his behaviour when the penalties were being taken, and then he took one of the worst penalties you’ll ever see. I don’t understand why you’d do it,” Carragher said.

Neville also added, “I don’t like it [subbing goalkeepers on for shootouts]. It’s not the time to analyse that, it could’ve paid off. They obviously know Kepa’s got an excellent penalty-saving record, but I still don’t understand it.

“Mendy’s been outstanding and made saves all the way through the game, he’s got the atmosphere, the feeling, he’s warmed up.”
